Cameron Sheffield was born into basketball. He grew up in Alpharetta, Georgia — the sprawling northern suburb of Atlanta where high school hoops are a religion and the talent pipeline feeds programs across the ACC, SEC, and beyond. His father, Marcus Sheffield Sr., played basketball at Morgan State and professionally overseas in Puerto Rico. His older brother, Marcus Sheffield II, starred at Stanford for four seasons before grad-transferring to Elon, where he led the Phoenix in scoring at 18.4 points per game under coach Mike Schrage — who would later join Jon Scheyer’s staff at Duke as special assistant to the head coach. The Sheffield family knew what it meant to play Division I basketball at elite academic institutions.
At Chattahoochee High School, Cameron became one of the most decorated players in the program’s history. He was a four-year varsity letter winner and team captain as both a junior and senior. As a junior, he averaged 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists, earning Second Team All-State honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and HoopSeen.com’s Junior of the Year award. Chattahoochee went 26-5 and reached the state tournament.
Senior year was the masterpiece. Sheffield led Chattahoochee to the Class 6A state championship — the first in school history. In the title game against Lanier, an overtime thriller that Chattahoochee won 69-66, Sheffield scored a game-high 31 points with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. He was named the AJC’s Class 6A Player of the Year, AJC First Team All-State, Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Class 6A All-State, and received the AJC Cup as the top all-around senior. On the AAU circuit, he played for Game Elite under Coach Tremayne Anchrum on the Adidas Gauntlet.
Sheffield committed to Rice University — following in his family’s tradition of pairing high-level basketball with elite academics. The choice wasn’t flashy, but it was deliberate. He was a 6-foot-6 wing with deep range, fierce rebounding instincts for his position, and a competitive edge forged in the crucible of Georgia playoff basketball.
