Season Overview

Freshman center Mike Gminski joined sophomore Jim Spanarkel and senior Tate Armstrong, and for two months it worked. Duke beat 15th-ranked NC State 84-82 in the Big Four Tournament, won at 15th-ranked Tennessee 81-78, and stood 11-3 after an overtime win at Virginia on January 17, 1977.

Armstrong broke his wrist in that game at Virginia and did not play again. He had been averaging 22.7 points. Without him Duke won three of its last 13 games, finishing 14-13 and 2-10 in the ACC, and lost to Clemson in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Spanarkel led the team at 19.2 points a game and Gminski averaged 15.3 points and 10.7 rebounds.
